Outdoor Concrete
Outdoor concrete grinding and polishing can enhance the appearance of outdoor spaces such as patios, driveways, and pool decks. It provides a durable and low-maintenance surface that can withstand outdoor conditions. However, it's important to use the right equipment and techniques to ensure a successful result that will last.

What is Outdoor Concrete?
Outdoor concrete refers to concrete surfaces that are located outside, exposed to the elements. This can include concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, and other outdoor areas. Outdoor concrete is typically subjected to a range of environmental factors such as sunlight, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations, which can affect its appearance and durability over time. Specialized techniques and treatments may be used to protect outdoor concrete and enhance its longevity, such as sealing, staining, or decorative coatings.ubjected to a range of environmental factors such as sunlight, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations, which can affect its appearance and durability over time. In general, most concrete can be polished. However, the quality of the final result can depend on factors such as the quality of the concrete mix, the level of aggregate exposure desired, and the condition of the existing concrete surface.
Maintaining polished concrete is relatively easy. Regular cleaning with a neutral pH cleaner and occasional resealing can help keep the surface looking its best.
For most jobs, the best time to polish is after gib and plaster, once the house is weathertight, but before skirtings and cabinetry are installed. This is especially important for heavier grinds - removing several millimetres off the slab means skirtings installed beforehand can end up looking like they are floating above the floor.
The slab should cure for at least 21 days before grinding begins. Once polishing is complete, the floor needs to be properly protected during the remaining build stages.
Concrete is a sustainable material, as it is made from natural ingredients such as sand, gravel, and water. It is also highly durable, which means it can last a long time and reduce the need for frequent replacement.
The polishing process itself is typically done without the use of harsh chemicals or coatings, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to other flooring treatments.
The cost of polished concrete in Auckland depends on floor size, slab condition, and finish type. Most jobs fall between $60 and $130 per m2 + GST. Larger open areas (200m2+) can come in around $60 per m2, while detailed work in finished homes can reach $120-$130 per m2. We have a minimum charge of $2,250 + GST for small areas under 20m2. Polished concrete undergoes a grinding and polishing process that regular concrete does not. This process enhances the appearance, durability, and stain resistance of the concrete surface.
- None (Cream Finish): A cream finish may be more susceptible to wear and staining, as the surface is smoother and less textured. It may require more frequent maintenance to keep it looking its best.
- Partial Exposure: Partial exposure provides a good balance between aesthetics and durability. The exposed aggregate adds texture to the surface, which can help hide wear and tear over time.
- Full Exposure: Full exposure can enhance the durability of the floor, as the exposed aggregate acts as a wear surface. It can withstand heavy traffic and is less likely to show scratches or wear patterns.
